Driver Education FAQs
The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System places certain restrictions on teens under the age of 18 who have learner permits and driver licenses. The law went into effect on July 1, 2001. Applicants who are 18 or older and teens who have graduated from high school are not affected by the GDL law. Anyone under the age of 18 who has a learner permit will be prohibited from driving between the hours of 10pm and 6am When driving, permit holders must have a licensed driver age 21 or older in the vehicle with them. Seatbelt use is mandatory for everyone in the vehicle and passengers age 3 and under must be in an approved child restraint device. For more information about Graduated Licensing, visit the Tennessee Graduated Driver License Program.
